My husband’s co-worker reached out to me about making his girlfriend a unicorn bracelet. Sure, I can do that. Then he asked me to make her a unicorn doll.
HAHA so Amigurumipatterns.net came to mind. I searched up “unicorn” on the site and came across “Lily Rainbow Cheeks.”* Bingo! I bought the pattern without hesitation and created this BEAUTIFUL doll:
I have received so many messages and compliments about her. I had a few interested buyers, but I think my price tag turned them off. Oops! But this was THE most complex doll I have ever made. Read more to find out why.
First impression. The PDF was incredibly detailed.
Ease. The pattern was well written, and everything was thoroughly explained.
Difficulties. There are A LOT of parts to this doll. A. LOT.
Time. I was on a time crunch making this doll, so I’m pretty sure it took it at least 11 hours. That’s a long time! More parts = more to sew. So at least 2 of those hours were spent sewing and hiding ends and tying knots.
Yarn. I like my amigurumi dollsextra large, so I usually work with Bernat Home Maker Dec. But this one required so many colors that Maker Home Dec doesn’t come in. So I decided to work with Color Made Easy* instead. I used a 6.5 mm hook.
Do I recommend? If you’re really trying to wow people with your crochet skills and you know that the selling price will make the hard work worth it (I sold mine for $65, but I plan to sell future dolls for at least $75), then I absolutely recommend! The woman who received this doll as her birthday present could not stop obsessing over it. She was soooo pleased with it.
Final thoughts. This doll was the most difficult thing I have ever made, but I don’t regret making it. If I ever have time in the future, I plan to make a few dolls for inventory and sell them at the huge craft shows that I attend.
